Who can give blood?
Most people can give blood. You can give blood if you:
are fit and healthy
weigh over 45kg
are aged between 17 and 60 (or 65 if you have given blood before)
are over 65 and have given blood in the last two years
Men can give blood every 3 months and women every 4 months.
Check you are able to give blood
If you have an existing medical condition or have a question about your eligibility to give blood you should check the health section before you book an appointment.
Common eligibility questions include:
Are you feeling well today?
Have you ever been deferred as a blood donor?
Have you ever been given blood (transfused)?
Have you visited a dentist in the last week?
Do you have a wound anywhere on your body?
Do you have a history of chronic illness like asthma, sickle cells, High blood pressure, ulcers, diabetes or epilepsy?
Are you undergoing any medication or are taking any medicine?
Medical or diagnostic procedure in the past, injection circumcision, body piercing not done in the Hospital or vaccinations?
Have you ever suffered a sexually transmitted infection?
Have you had liver disease such as hepatitis and jaundice?
Have ever had an HIV test? (Results)
Had sex with male, female prostitute or more than one partner?
Have you had your menstruation in the last seven days?
Are you pregnant or breast-feeding?
